The Reggie Thomas Quintet performs the 39th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, Millennium Park, Pianist and organist Reggie Thomas will team up this afternoon, as he frequently does, with his wife, sultry singer Mardra Thomas. Their four fine albums together include Matters of the Heart, the title of which tells you where they’re coming from as artists. Reggie, who recently succeeded the esteemed Ron Carter as head of jazz studies at Northern Illinois University, also played on trumpeter Mike Vax’s Creepin’ with Clark, featuring the late, sorely missed Clark Terry. Mardra has drawn warm acclaim for her stage portrayal of Billie Holiday. The Thomas’ will be accompanied at the festival by saxophonist Geof Bradfield, a fellow professor of Reggie’s at NIU; bassist Irvin Taylor, who played in the final edition of Mulgrew Miller’s band, Wingspan, and drummer Montez Coleman, whose credits include stints with Roy Hargrove. The Reggie Thomas Quintet performs at the 39th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, Millennium Park, Von Freeman Pavilion. Reggie Thomas on piano, Ivan Taylor-bass, Montez Coleman-drums, Geof Bradfield-Sax and Mardra Thomas-vocals.
